Empower Retirement: Our associates’ mission to do the right thing
When the numbers were compiled and the Empower Retirement 2018 Community Impact Report was complete, I was inspired.
Our Empower associates gave 20,076 hours of their time to nonprofit organizations in their communities. They spent time serving dinners at homeless shelters, made superhero capes for children in foster care, and sorted and packed medical supply donations, to list just a few examples of their good work.
Empower associates, whose mission centers on helping working people create the financial security they deserve, also financially supported the causes closest to their hearts. They donated, together with a company match, $2.85 million to nearly 1,000 unique nonprofit organizations.
All of this serves as a means of highlighting the tremendous impact any team of committed individuals can have in their communities in partnership with non-profit organizations and their dedicated leaders. It’s also a reminder of how much opportunity exists to employ one’s talents and resources toward so many social needs.
Here in Colorado, home of our company headquarters, our associates were involved with more than 436 Colorado charitable organizations.
Associates across our company in Kansas City; Milwaukee; the Boston area; Somerset, New Jersey; and Bangalore, India, formed teams and coordinated work departments to fundraise and participate in activities like the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, and 40 associates ran in a race to benefit Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired.
We launched our Associates Community Together (ACT) program in 2016, and each year our associates give just a little more time and a little more money. In 2018, associates volunteered 2,200 more hours than the prior year and helped raise awareness of 100 more community organizations than in the previous year.
That means something to everyone here at Empower. Among our company values we take seriously the importance of accountability and commitment to always doing the right things.
When I read our 2018 Community Impact Report, I see those values in action. My takeaway is that Empower has great associates who every day demonstrate a tremendous commitment in the workplace to serve the needs of clients – but then continue with that accountability in their commitment to doing the right things for the causes that mean the most to them.
We believe doing the right thing means understanding, supporting and leveraging the inherent differences that make each of us unique and valuable.
